Marrietocracy vs Meritocracy

Marriedtocracy was a a word creatively coined by a Temasek Review commentator about the newly appoint PAP Member of Parliament(MP) Tin Pei Lin. Tin Pei Lin was voted as the most unpopular candidate by people online, but won her MP seat as part of the Group Representative Council (GRC) helmed by the ex-Prime Minister, now Minister Mentor Goh ChokTong.

The Group Representative Council is a world unique democratic structure created by the PAP government and was legislated into existence by the then PAP controlled Parliament. Under this system, electoral constituencies were integrated into blocks and the individual MPs would contest the General Elections as a Group. Singapore citizens hate the system as it brings to them Parliamentary Representatives that they actually do not favor like the presently discussed Tin Pei Lin. Even more, everyone can see that it is a ploy to perpetuate PAP power since it is not easy for the budding opposition to group up a strong team against one led by an existing cabinet minister.

The story behind Tin Pei Lin's rise in the PAP regime has been attributed to her marriage to the Private Secretary of the current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Hence the term Marriedtocracy instead of the much favored value of Meritocracy in Singapore.

2011 is a watershed year for Singapore..not just for the loud outcry of protest against the PAP government, but for the ushering in of a new national value MARRIEDTOCRACY.
