More and more unhappy but politically aware citizens, are coming out with more creative Brand Positioning Taglines for the PAP, the incumbent party that have ruled with No Opposition for more than 50 years, since the country's independence.
PAY and PAY - was a popular tagline for a long time, referring to the government's ingenious ways to tax the people by the imposing fees of every kind. Living in Singapore become a PAY and PAY experience. In the recent years, with the populace finding it difficult to maintain their current standards of life... stagnant incomes, rising cost of living and More PAY and Pay, people have become disgruntled with the ruling PAP. This has given rise to even more creative taglines.
PAY and POKAI - is a derivative of PAY and PAY. "Pokai" for being bankrupt. Bankruptcies are certain on the rise in Singapore. Instead of arresting is pace of increase, the PAP government has openly declared that its OK to be bankrupt and have relaxed bankruptcy laws to make is easier for bankrupts to be reinstated as business owners and company directors.
PARTY AGAINST PEOPLE - has become popular since the General Election in in May 2011. The May elections confirmed that at least 40% of Singaporeans feel that PAP policies are against them...maybe for the rich and powerful, for themselves, for the immigrants, for the foreigners, etc. Hence PARTY AGAINST PEOPLE.
PAPIES - This word does not have any specific meaning but does sound quite derogatory. It is commonly used to annotate PAP supporters and members. The closest I got to a definition is when someone explained to me, "You know the Pap Smear, you know where they do it?...its something like that"
Not to be let down, Goh Chok Tong, the ex-Prime Minster of Singapore now Senior Minister
drawing a annual salary way beyond S$3,000,000, labelled the National Solidarity Party, (NSP), a growing in strength opposition party as "No Substance Party"
Meanwhile there are calls to PAP to change its name to Foreigners Action Party (FAP) and Immigrants Action Party (IAP) in recognition of the Parties dedication to create a Singapore of which are new immigrants. At the recent 2011 elections, some 100,000 new citizens voted for the PAP. In the 2016, elections some 1,000,000 new residents will be eligible vote, way ahead of the children of young Singapore couples today.
